We aim to provide a warm, caring and respectful atmosphere where children learn not only to answer the questions, but also to question the answers. Every day is a new adventure in Year Four, and we understand that every child has something unique to offer, while on their learning journey. We encourage children to work both independently and collaboratively, learning new skills every day. Our goal is that we give our pupils the skills to ‘know what to do when they don’t know what to do.’
“We love learning in Year Four! We get to use ICT all the time and it really helps us to find things out. Our lovely teacher is patient and very funny. We learn in different ways and it is always exciting. We look forward to coming to school, and when we get there we are ready to learn and we all have smiling faces!” - Celyn, Jess, Ross and Mia.
Each child sits down with their teacher and decides on appropriate learning targets. Once they are consistently achieving these goals then new targets are identified. There are also whole-class learning targets such as improving handwriting, learning times tables and planning science investigations.
We believe in rewarding effort and good behaviour in all aspects of our school life. House points are awarded for work and attitude. We also have trophies and certificates for ‘Worker of the week’, ‘Kindness of the week’ and ‘Helpwr heddiw’ (helper of the day in Welsh).
We do PE on Mondays and Fridays, although it is a good idea for children to have their kit in school all week. This should comprise shorts, tracksuit trousers, trainers or daps and a t-shirt in their house colour. For safety reasons we expect long hair to be tied back and all jewellery to be removed. They will also require a swimsuit in the autumn term.
One of the most important ways parents can help their child’s education is to share a book with them every night. Discussing the plot and characters helps pupils improve their reading skills. Children should take their book and reading record home every night, and return it to school each day.
Although we set regular home learning tasks (which aim to reinforce what we have covered in class), we also encourage the children to research various topics and read widely around subjects that interest them. This is completely optional, but it is beneficial to the children. We would ask that, if possible, you provide access to reference materials such as an encyclopaedia, the internet, the Discovery Channel or the public library. Even a wise, elderly relative or friend can enhance your child’s learning!
Throughout the year you will be able to follow your child’s progress by logging into our Moodle (a virtual learning environment where the children can develop their skills and work on educational tasks). Your child will show you how to do this.
